Amendment 2 would have repealed and prohibited the passage or enforcement of laws or ordinances that protect individual civil rights based on sexual orientation. Bayless's decision makes permanent his temporary injunction against Amendment 2 which was earlier upheld by the Colorado Supreme Court. "We could not be happier. Amendment 2 was bred from hate and ignorance, it has met its just course. The Court has shown that real family values of unconditional love, support and acceptance, are the law of the land," said Sandra Gillis, Executive Director of PFLAG, an international organization of families and friends of gays, lesbians and bisexuals committed to fighting homophobia and supporting equal rights. Gerda Fletcher, chapter vice-president of PFLAG-Colorado Springs, said "to deny any citizen due process of the law would be a set back to the entire United States. We are aware that laws do not necessarily change the hearts and minds of people, and therefore, we will not give up our efforts to educate and support the parents, siblings and friends of our gay, lesbian and bisexual loved ones, and to advocate equal treatment under the law." PFLAG will continue to monitor and respond to similar anti-civil rights actions across the country. -30- P-FLAG: PARENTS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF LESBIANS AND GAYS 1012 14th Street, NW Suite 700, Washington, DC 20005 (202)-638-4200 Fax: (202)-638-0243 E-mail: PFLAGNTL@AOL.COM
