Date: Fri, 17 Nov 1995 12:25:35 -0600 From: (by way of Steve Basile ) Subject: 11/16 Project Open Mind Update PROJECT OPEN MIND UPDATE November 16, 1995 FOR EXTERNAL USE: PFLAG appreciates the many calls, letters and faxes that have been going out to the television stations that have pulled or refused our ads. Some callers have been told by the heads of the stations that they don't know what the caller is talking about and never refused the ads. This information is inaccurate. All of the stations were contacted and either pulled or refused the ads. The heads of the stations are not checking with their advertising managers before giving out inaccurate information. Please do not be confused or concerned by the misinformation from the stations. We are also pleased and appreciative of the many dozens of calls for copies of the ads for various programs, conferences, meetings, etc. The ads are part of a comprehensive public education campaign implemented by local PFLAG chapters that includes ongoing media and community outreach in their communities. The ads are not designed to be a stand alone. We hope you understand why we cannot provide copies of the ads. We are now pursuing print ads in the Atlanta, Houston and Tulsa markets to bring both the message of Project Open Mind and the actions by the Christian Broadcasting Network to these communities. A planned buy in a national newspaper is also being negotiated. We will have final word on these print buys in tomorrow's update. PFLAG is also exploring legal options available to us in order to get the ads on the air and in response to the CBN action. Action Items: * Continue calls to the stations. Here is email/fax information for the Tulsa station (KJRH) that pulled the ads after running them for 5 days: kjrh news@aol.com Fax 918-748-1460 and the Houston station (KHOU) that said they would air one of the ads and then backed away: khou@neosoft.com Fax 713-521-4326 This concludes today's update -0-
