PFLAG MEMBERS HOST ELLEN SCREENINGS ACROSS COUNTY

Looking forward to finally having their families represented during prime
time, members of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
across the country plan to host screenings of the April 30 and May 7
"coming out" episodes of the popular sitcom Ellen. Screening hosts hope to
use this historical television event not only as a chance to celebrate, but
also as an opportunity to reach out to other straight Americans and destroy
the myths and misperceptions about gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

"Too often, our society is too quick to stereotype gay people," said PFLAG
National President Nancy McDonald. "This is not surprising, since most of
us have no access to accurate information about homosexuality. Now,
however, we can sit down with our neighbors, and talk about a television
character whose clever wit and hysterical antics we have all grown to love.
And we can discuss what it means when this character -- whom many of us
adopt into our families once a week -- comes out as a lesbian. This is an
incredible opportunity for PFLAG members to broach a sensitive topic in a
way that can make others feel comfortable."

In addition to using this event to educate in their communities, PFLAG
members are celebrating for very personal reasons.

"Ever since the television industry acknowledged that all American families
did not mirror Ozzie and Harriet's TV family, it has made efforts to show
the diversity that makes up our communities," said McDonald. "We have seen
sitcoms with divorced parents, adopted children, interracial relationships,
single dads and lower income families. The time is definitely ripe for the
networks to use a sitcom to explore a journey made by thousands of real
life American families -- the journey to appreciation for family members
who come out as gay, lesbian or bisexual. We are grateful to the show's
producers and network for carrying this story line."

When the character, Ellen Morgan, comes out to herself and her friends in
the April 30th episode, and her family and her employer in subsequent
episodes, she will become the first leading gay or lesbian character on
television. Although many television shows feature supporting gay and
lesbian characters, this landmark in television history is drawing
nationwide attention. The Rev. Jerry Falwell, and other members of the
religious right, have asked the primary advertisers of Ellen to withdraw
their support, and several advertisers have decided to do so. PFLAG
members will respond during their screenings by sending letters of
appreciation to the network, the show producers and those advertisers who
have chosen to continue their support of this historic moment.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) promotes the
health and well-being of gay, lesbian and bisexual persons, their families
and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education,
to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination
and secure civil rights. PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about
sexual orientation, and acts to create a society that is healthy, and
respectful of diversity. Founded in 1981, PFLAG is now organized in 400
communities nationwide, with more than 68,000 household members.
