Michael L. Frederickson, 39, who held previous positions with the NAMES Project, the Gay Games and the Washington D.C. AIDSWALK, assumed the job of executive following a nationwide search by NLGJA, which has 1,100 members in 18 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. "We're very pleased with the selection of Mike Frederickson," said Leroy Aarons, NLGJA president. "It was time for our organization to take the next step in professionalization. Mike has a demonstrated capacity for creative leadership that we expect will bring NLGJA to a new plane of energy and accomplishment." Among Frederickson's first duties will be to relocate the organization from Sebastopol, CA. to a site to be determined in Washington. It is anticipated the new location will enhance NLGJA's visibility and effectiveness. Aarons, who founded NLGJA in 1990 will continue to serve as President, working closely with the new executive as well as heading the Board of Directors and the executive committee. "The impressive work of NLGJA in five years is extraordinary," said Frederickson. "I hope to bring my experience with national-level volunteer and event management to help NLGJA grow in membership, chapter development and fiscal resources. This will expand its capacity to fulfill its basic mission of truthful and fair telling of the gay and lesbian story." Frederickson, a native of Seattle, Wash., received a degree in journalism and spent the first six years of his career as a reporter and art director with Sunset Magazine in Menlo Park, CA. He later served as volunteer service coordinator with the Shanti Project, an AIDS service organization in San Francisco, and later the NAMES Project, keepers of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. In 1984 he served as director of volunteer services for the Gay Games in New York City. In 1995, Frederickson directed Washington's AIDSWALK, the largest non-political fundraising event in the mid-Atlantic states. The AIDSWALK raised $1.7 million and involved 30,000 participants. NLGJA is a professional and educational organization of gay and lesbian journalists in print and electronic media. Its mission is to work within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of gay issues. Frederickson will run the day-to-day operation of NLGJA, advancing Board policy in areas of chapter development, membership, fundraising, conference planning and programs.
