The forum, entitled, The Stage We're In and the Stage We're on: Entertainment, Sexuality and Intolerance, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 at the Provincetown Town Hall. In addition to Kushner, the forum will feature: Richard Schneider, Editor and Founder of The Harvard Gay and Lesbian Review; acclaimed novelist and playwright Sarah Schulman, who is one of the co-founders of Lesbian Avengers; MIT theater professor and author Brenda Cotto-Escalera; actor, writer and performer Ryan Landry (Dragula); and comic and writer Kate Clinton (Don't Get Me Started). "We are seeing more gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual characters and themes on TV, in the movies and in other forms of media than ever before," said NGLTF Executive Director Kerry Lobel. "Yet on both the cultural and political stage, attacks against us are both more common and more sophisticated. This forum will give us a taste of the cultural and political challenges we face in the years ahead and what we can do to transform intolerance into understanding." The NGLTF forum is free of charge and for everyone to attend. "The Provincetown Host Committee is proud to sponsor what promises to be a lively and informed discussion on an issue of vital importance to our communities," said Boston and Provincetown resident J.R. Dreyer, "It's appropriate that such a discussion take place in Provincetown, given the prominent role of P-Town's artistic and theatrical community." The Tony Kushner forum is one of a series of events planned for the last week of August by the Provincetown Host Committee to benefit NGLTF's programs. This year's events will be held under the theme, "Creating Culture and Community." Other events include: an artists' reception and preview on Aug. 25th at the Schoolhouse for the 4th annual Art Auction; and the 12th Annual Sunset Deck Party 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Red Inn. The deck party will feature the Art Auction, presentation of Provincetown Community Service Awards, a special NGLTF award to Tony Kushner and presentation of a $5,000 grant to the Provincetown Domestic Violence Intervention Office.
