Date: Tue, 13 Oct 98 16:55:02 -0400 From: NGLTF Subject: Advisory: Release of Report on ExGay Movement ************************************************ NATIONAL GAY AND LESBIAN TASK FORCE MEDIA ADVISORY Contact: Tracey Conaty, Communications Director tconaty@ngltf.org 202-332-6483 x3303 800-757-6476 pager 2320 17th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009 http://www.ngltf.org *********************************************** Under the guise of compassion, the Christian Right is intensifying its anti-gay campaign at a time when hate crimes against lesbians and gay men -- like the fatal assault on 22 year old Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard -- remain pervasive, a new study shows. The report, "Calculated Compassion: How the Ex-Gay Movement Serves the Right's Attack on Democracy," documents for the first time that groups like the Family Research Council and Christian Coalition are promoting the bogus notion that people can be "converted" to heterosexuality as camouflage for a new effort to strip lesbians and gay men of their basic civil rights. The report will be issued on Thursday, October 15. It is a collaboration of three organizations representing distinct perspectives on the subject: Political Research Associates, a Boston- based independent research center that studies anti-democratic movements; the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, a leading civil rights organization; and Equal Partners in Faith, a national network of religious leaders. Representatives of the three organizations and others will hold a press conference to detail the reportís findings at 11 am on October 15, at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1313 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. Copies of the report and other information will be available there. For more information, or to schedule interviews, contact: Colleen O'Connor, Equal Partners in Faith, (202) 296-4672 ext.14. As part of a broader social justice movement for freedom, justice and equality, NGLTF is creating a world that respects and celebrates the diversity of human expression and identity where all people may fully participate in society. _________________________________________ This message was issued by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Media Department.
