Much of the $319,500 grant will be dedicated to the Task Force's work in fostering and supporting state and local organizing. The grant is earmarked for general operating support through December 1999. "This gift, marking our 25th anniversary, is a strong affirmation of the priority the Task Force places on supporting local and state organizing," said Kerry Lobel, NGLTF executive director. "Given increased attacks by the right wing in cities and states across America, it is critical that we continue to strengthen gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender political organizations at the local and state level." Since its inception in 1973, NGLTF has been at the forefront of every major initiative for GLBT civil rights. In all of its efforts, NGLTF works to strengthen the GLBT movement at the state and local level while connecting these activities to a national vision for change. As part of this work, NGLTF helped launch and now coordinates the Federation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Statewide Political Organizations. The Task Force is playing a leading national role in assisting the Federation with the Equality Begins at Home campaign. Equality Begins at Home, a major grassroots organizing initiative, is a series of actions in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) equality to be held in every state and territory during the week of March 21 - 27, 1999. "We are pleased to continue our partnership with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force," said Erika J. Shatz, Gill Foundation program officer. "The Foundation is inspired by NGLTF's effective programming as well as its broad base of support among activists and organizations around the country." -30- _____________________________________________________________________ Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force works to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people at the local, state and national level. As part of a broader social justice movement for freedom, justice and equality, NGLTF is creating a world that respects and celebrates the diversity of human expression and identity where all people may fully participate in society. _________________________________________ This message was issued by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Media Department.
