WHAT: National Day of Action for the Freedom to Marry WHO: Local activists organizing visibility actions to mobilize community support for the freedom to marry WHERE: The marriage license bureau in your community WHEN: Friday, November 6, 1998 These are critical days in our struggle to win the freedom to marry. On November 3, voters in Hawaii and Alaska will decide whether to carve holes in those states' constitutions all to stop courts from affirming our right to civil marriage. On November 6, you respond. Win or lose those votes, non-gay and gay members of the National Freedom to Marry Coalition are urging local activists and leaders across the country to galvanize public support for ending discrimination in marriage and organize visibility actions in their communities on Friday, November 6. Join or organize non-violent, non-confrontational actions at local marriage license bureaus to feature couples, clergy, parents, and friends speaking out in support of the freedom to marry. The legal fight continues in Hawaii, Alaska, and Vermont (where a court case is before the state Supreme Court). Public support is crucial to the long-range goal of protecting our relationships and families by ending marriage discrimination. Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund has resource kit that can help local organizers plan their events. This kit and links to other organizations and their resources are available on Lambda's website (www.lambdalegal.org). Let us know how your community is taking part in this National Day of Action.
