The duo, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, both out lesbians, are known for their stirring folk-rock music, avid and loyal following, and active support of a number of social justice issues. The duo is performing in Washington on August 10 at the 9:30 Club. "We are thrilled to have the Indigo Girls support NGLTF's 25 years of commitment to change," said Task Force executive director Kerry Lobel. "Amy and Emily's active support of equality and justice for all people, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, is an invaluable part of our struggle." Indigo Girl Emily Saliers states, "Although we've come a long way, the gay rights movement has a long way to go. Amidst a barrage of anti-gay advertisement and legislation, we come together to play music and raise money for groups like the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force who will implement positive change for gay and straight people everywhere." Saliers added, "We will not forget the gay teen suicides, the bashing, discrimination and homophobia rampant in this country. Rather, we will come together through music and hard work to help create a world where all people are equally respected as human beings and protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation." The Indigo Girls were recently the target of discrimination this past Spring when three of their free high schools shows were cancelled because of their sexual orientation. True to form, the duo went on with the show, performing free concerts after school hours and off school grounds. -30- _____________________________________________________________________ Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force works to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people at the local, state and national level.
