VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE TO ATTEND NGLTF EVENT HONORING CORETTA SCOTT KING AND OTHERS WASHINGTON, DC---September 12, 1997---The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) announced today that Vice President Al Gore will attend NGLTF's eighth annual "Honoring Our Allies" event next Monday in Washington. At the September 15, 1997 event, Coretta Scott King, John Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO, and the Mautner Project, a health services organization for lesbians with cancer, will all be recognized for their work on behalf of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. "I am very pleased that the Vice President will join us as we pay tribute to this year's honorees," said Kerry Lobel, executive director. "I'm grateful that Vice President Gore will have the opportunity to meet members of our community at one of NGLTF's most important events. As we move toward the 21st century it is key that the Vice President and other members of the Administration demonstrate the depth of their commitment to our community both in style and substance." Other members of the Administration who will attend the event include Bruce Lehman, Assistant Secretary and Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks in the Department of Commerce, Sandra Thurman, Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy, and Richard Socarides, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor for Public Liaison. Congress will also be well-represented at this year's event. Among the members of Congress planning to attend "Honoring Our Allies" are Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Rep. Ronald Dellums (D-CA), Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), and Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY). Honoring Our Allies" begins at 5:30 PM and will be held in the Jefferson room of the Washington Hilton located at 1919 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.
