The Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program this week approved a $40,000 grant for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). The grant, which recognizes NGLTF's work "developing new public policies and new ways of organizing from the grassroots," marks the first time the Veatch Program has funded a gay and lesbian organization. The funds will be used to support NGLTF trainings and workshops. The Veatch grant will support NGLTF programs to fight anti-gay attacks through specific skills-training workshops. NGLTF field organizers will work with local activists to use the media, fundraise, develop analysis, get out the vote and develop strategies. In 1994, NGLTF held trainings for local activists in cities all across the country including Honolulu, Hawaii, Lincoln, Nebraska and Albuquerque, New Mexico. "NGLTF is pleased to receive this pledge of support from the Unitarian Universalist community," said NGLTF Executive Director Melinda Paras. "With support from the Veatch Program, NGLTF can further our commitment to infusing local activists with the resources and skills necessary to battle the Radical Right." In addition to crisis-focused trainings, the Veatch Program grant will fund NGLTF's work toward long-term change through movement building institutes and trainings. Institutes such as those held last year in Kansas City, Missouri and Denver, Colorado, provide an opportunity for activists to understand Radical Right strategies and link oppressions in order to build coalition partners. "NGLTF's movement building focus is unique in the national gay and lesbian movement," said Paras. "Task Force field organizers are conducting long term, grassroots, multi-racial, multi-issue organizing in the field. Support from the Veatch Program will directly assist this coalition-building approach to fighting the right-wing agenda." The Veatch Program is a grant-making program of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, New York. The Veatch Program supports Unitarian Universalist congregations and non-denominational organizations whose goals reflect the principles of Unitarian Universalism. --end--
