Thanks for your email regarding KFC. This issue is very complicated and
involves a 2-year history of African-American civil rights leaders in
Louisville pressuring KFC around its treatment of employees of color. Now,
with the incident of alleged mistreatment of a gay employee coming to light,
there are more opportunities for the gay and Black communities to work
together to ensure a workplace free of intolerance and discrimination at KFC.

KFC does have an "Equal Employment Opportunity" policy that includes sexual
orientation. It was revised on April 2, 1993, after the alleged anti-gay
incident. We have requests from KFC for several things: How does the policy
specifically affect employees in Louisville, which does not have a city-wide
anti-discrimination ordinance; what has KFC done to implement the policy, in
particular in terms of informing its managers and supervisors; and what
sensitivity training has the company done around sexual orientation and
HIV/AIDS issues. In addition, we are asking them to publicly support the
Louisville ordinance now up before the Board of Aldermen that would ban
discrimination based on sexual orientation, and to meet in good faith with
representatives of the Black and gay/lesbian communities together (not
divided) to discuss workplace issues. Leaders in the African-American
community have testified on behalf of gays in support of the local ordinance.

So although KFC has a policy, which we are grateful for, we want KFC to go
two steps further. This story is a good example of how the Black and gay
communities can work together to create a workplace free of discrimination
for all.
