KASSEBAUM'S "MEAN-SPIRITED" HEALTH CARE AMENDMENT Washington, D.C.-- (May 25, 1994) -- The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) condemns an attempt by Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS) to strip several provisions from Sen. Edward Kennedy's health reform bill. In an amendment submitted today, Kassebaum wants to remove "sexual orientation, income, health status, and anticipated need for health services" from the section of the bill barring discrimination in the delivery of service. "Kassebaum's amendment is mean-spirited at its core," said Peri Jude Radecic, NGLTF Executive Director. "It would permit discrimination against many individuals who are in the greatest need of health reform. By offering this amendment, Kassebaum is endorsing discrimination against gay people, poor people, those who are currently sick, or those who may become sick." --30-- 1734 14th Street, NW Washington, DC 20009 (202) 332-6483 (202) 332-0207 fax (202) 332-6219 TTY
