Executive Director Melinda Paras issued the following statement: Joycelyn Elders is an outstanding advocate and pioneer for health and public welfare. She has provided a real response to the health and welfare needs of many communities too long ignored by the medical establishment including gays and lesbians. She has been there for us at times when people were afraid to discuss explicit issues of sexuality and sexual orientation. A successful prevention program demands an open discussion. President Clinton's decision to request Joycelyn Elders' resignation is a painful blow to sound public health policy in the midst of an epidemic. The political agendas of the radical right should never be allowed to interfere with public health. I am gravely concerned about the repercussions this message will send to health educators around the country. Frank explicit language on sexual issues, especially among our young people, is important for creating effective AIDS prevention and sound public health policy. Elders identified AIDS as a priority and pushed for a realistic federal response. Joycelyn Elders is a brilliant, articulate and compassionate leader. She has been exactly what our country needed.
