The following is forwarded from NGLTF on America Online: =========================================================================== Subj: NGLTF & Guinier withdrawal 93-06-09 14:00:55 EDT From: PROG NGLTF NGLTF STATEMENT ON PROFESSOR LANI GUINIER Washington, D.C., June 8, 1993...The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) is extremely disappointed in President Clinton's decision to withdraw the nomination of Professor Lani Guinier to head the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. Professor Guinier should have been accorded a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Instead, she was given no opportunity to correct disinformation on her views spread by those whose clear intent is to undermine the enforcement of civil rights legislation in this country. The behavior of Senators of both parties in mischaracterizing Professor Guinier's writings on the Voting Rights Act as "anti-democratic" is nothing but the usual double-speak and sloganeering that passes for analysis in these matters. Most of the remedies proposed by Professor Guinier in her very theoretical law review articles were not radical, except to those who believe that white majorities should be able to maintain power over local governments. Indeed, all of the remedies suggested in her articles have been proposed and accepted in various cases by the Justice Department under President Reagan, precisely because they accomplish the protection of minority voting access and participation in government. Professor Guinier's life work has been devoted to achieving equality and justice for all Americans. NGLTF, through our coalition work with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, fully supported Professor Guinier's nomination to the nation's top civil rights post. ### [The above statement is attributable to Torie Osborn, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. NGLTF is the nation's oldest national lesbian and gay civil rights advocacy organization.] ===========================================================================
