Members of Congress as well as gay and lesbian veterans will be honored at the June 24th event sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute. "Honoring Our Allies, Forging Our Future" is the third annual Congressional reception for NGLTF members, friends and allies. This year's gala is an opportunity to honor members of Congress who have sought to overturn the current military ban on gay and lesbian servicemembers and those who are leaders in the struggle for gay and lesbian civil rights. The reception will honor Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), chairman of the Government Operations Committee who requested a study by the Government Accounting Office to investigate the cost of discharging gay and lesbian servicemembers; Rep. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) who introduced H.Res. 271 which directs the President to rescind the military's ban on gay servicemembers; and members of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Veterans of America (GLBVA), an organization which has taken the helm of the battle to secure civil rights for gay servicemembers and veterans. Special guests at the reception include Rep. Gerry Studds (D-MA), Joe Steffan, who was dismissed from the Naval Academy because he is gay, and Sgt. Miriam Ben-Shalom, chairperson of GLBVA. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Avenue, N.W., from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 1992. Tickets to the event are $50 each. Other levels of giving include $125 for Advocates who receive two tickets and have their name included in the invitation and program; $250 for Sponsors who receive two tickets, VIP recognition at the event and are named in all promotional materials; and $500 for Benefactors who receive two tickets to the event as well as two tickets to a private post-reception dinner, VIP recognition and are named in all promotional materials. All portions of the donation above $20 are tax-deductible. Tickets are available from NGLTF ahead of time or at the door.
