NATIONAL GAY & LESBIAN TASK FORCE- PRESS RELEASE From Ron.DeVrou@f70.n109.z1.fidonet.org Program Assistant NGLTF FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Robert Bray, (202) 332-6483 Ron.DeVrou@f70.n109.z1.fidonet.org ROCKERS, POLS OPPOSE ANTI-GAY DISCRIMINATION: NIRVANA, JOAN JETT SUPPORT CRACKER BARREL PROTEST; WASHINGTON STATE GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE SIGNS MILITARY DISCRIMINATION PETITION Washington, D.C., April 16, 1992...Dave Grohl, drummer for the triple-platinum hardrock band, Nirvana, and veteran rocker Joan Jett signed a National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) Policy Institute petition against the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Cracker Barrel last year announced an anti-gay personnel policy and has fired employees simply for being lesbian or gay. The two rock celebrities signed on to the petition at a benefit concert held in Washington, D.C., on April 4, 1992, for the National Organization for Women's March for Women's Lives. The benefit also featured the punk band Fugazi, and included the all-female punk bands, L7 and Scrawl. Positive Force, a progressive group that organized the benefit, invited NGLTF to set up a table of information in the performance venue. David Thorpe, NGLTF intern, staffed the table and reported that Jett, dressed in black leather, read and eagerly signed the Cracker Barrel petition. Grohl also signed the petition during the gig. According to the April 16 issue of Rolling Stone, members of Nirvana have a history of rejecting the homophobic attitudes of their rural hometown, Aberdeen, Wash. Married lead-singer Kurt Cobain was arrested in 1985 for writing "HOMOSEXUAL SEX RULES" on a local bank. Cobain kissed bassist Chris Novoselic on the lips at the end of a recent Saturday Night Live performance. Nirvana's latest album, "Nevermind," with its popular single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," has sold more than three million copies and bumped Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" album from the top spot on the Billboard charts. Meanwhile, another public figure from Washington State recently showed his support for gay and lesbian rights. Joe King, gubernatorial candidate and current Speaker of the House of the Washington State Legislature, signed an NGLTF petition calling on President Bush to rescind the Department of Defense policy that excludes lesbians and gays from the military.
