Latino/a Lesbiana & Gay Organization (LLEGO) Fact Sheet WHAT IS LLEGO? LLEGO is an organization dedicated to building a national network of lesbian and gay Latinas(os) to aid in addressing our concerns locally, state-wide and natinally. LLEGO was formed to educate and sensitize ourselves as well as our Latino and non-Latino communities on issues related to homophobia, sexism, and discrimination. HOW DID LLEGO BEGIN? LLEGO began in October 1987 during the national march on Washington for lesbian and gay rights. Over 70 people from 13 states and Puerto Rico attended the first meeting, el primer encuentro de gais y lesbianas. The organization drafted by-laws and elected an interim board of directors in Feb 1988 at the segundo encuentrop in LA. Since 1988, LLEGO's been providing culturallyu sensitive workshops and education on AIDS/SIDA to the Latino/a gay/lesbian communities through sub-contracts and grants. HOW IS LLEGO STRUCTURED? LLEGO is divided into four geographic divisions: eastern, south-central, north central and western regions. 4 reps from each region are elected to serve on the board for one and two year terms. LLEGO maintains a national office in Washington DC. Various categories of individual and organization memberships are accepted. WHAT ARE LLEGO'S OBJECTIVES? To build a national network that facilitates the sharing of info and resources for and about lesbianas Latinas and gay Latinos. WHAT ARE LLEGO'S ACTIVITIES? LLEGO sponsors national and regional meetings periodically. LLEGO hosted its first national conference in Houston, TX in 1992. A national conference is planned for October 7-11, 1993 in San Jose California. New board members will be announced at the conference in October.
