Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 10:00:09 -0500 From: Kevin Ivers Subject: GAY GOP MAYOR RETRACTS COMMENTS CITY OF PLATTSBURGH Daniel L. Stewart, Mayor To: Log Cabin Republicans 1633 Q Street N.W. Washington, DC 20009 As a response to the legitimate concerns that have been raised over my statements at an Albany, NY news conference held on this day, I offer the following for your organization. My statement that it was good for Governor Bush not to speak to Log Cabin was directed in an uninformed way, for which I apologize. My understanding was that Governor Bush had rejected the chance to meet because of reports that members of Log Cabin had already begun fundraising in support of Sen. McCain, something I consider a politically wise move. I have since been advised that the decision not to meet was actually made by the Bush campaign prior to any activities with the McCain group. Under these circumstances, I must publicly state that my comments were wrong. Governor Bush should not have rejected a meeting with Log Cabin. I regret that my statements caused your organization to be swamped with e-mails and calls. Before I make further comments on this subject, I will be sure to seek information through your office to assure I am factual. Again, this is a most regrettable action on my part and I ask for your understanding that mistakes are made -- and this was surely a bad one. Log Cabin Republicans have had a dramatic impact upon how my political life has formed over time. Your organization is one I respect, and I would never knowingly hamper your vital mission to the gay community for inclusion within the political and social spectrum. Sincerely, Daniel L.
