July 14, 1998 Letters to the Editor Contact: A-Jay Eddy (954) LCR-1995 Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida P.O. Box 1281, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33302 SADLY, TODAY'S RIGID EVANGELICAL-FUNDAMENTALISTS ARE NOT BIBLICAL GOOD SAMARITANS FOR GAYS Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Though the streets are sparkling clean, the shrubs are impeccably manicured and the three brilliant steeples of the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Cathedral rocket into the heavens there's hardly a good Samaritan in that temple's hierarchy when it comes to the skewed anti-gay revelations rolling off the tongue of evangelical-political activist Dr. D. James Kennedy. A founding board member of the Rev. Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority, Kennedy calls for the protection of "religious liberty and American heritage by encouraging the application of Biblical principles to all spheres of our culture and to all of our lives." He ties his crusade to that of Dobson's and Bauer's who set the condescending anti-gay agenda for Focus on the Family, the Christian Coalition and others. Behind his elegant-rosewood-cathedral-office doors Kennedy and his strategists condemn and collect. Like temple money-exchanges they heed not the "Golden Rule" while calling for the "Reclaiming of American for Christ" but, conjure up "brimstone and fire" direct and indirect deceptive images of gay women and men. Who will be the next victims of these strict Biblical fundamentalists? If homosexuality could be eliminated through conversion therapy must all Americans be born again? Jews, Muslims, non-Christian native Americans, Gypsies, etc. beware of the those recent enticing ads which promulgate the "fundamentalist cure" for demonic homosexual sinners. The credentialed American Psychological Association has not accepted that conversion strategy as the only alternative therapy in understanding human sexuality. The A.P.A. rejects the distortion of truth just as medieval martyrs rejected the religious belief that the earth was flat. Let's face the obvious reality of what our Founding Fathers passed on when coupling "Freedom of Religion" to "Freedom From Religious Persecution." There can be no real lasting freedom in the elimination of either. Kid yourself not! What these hard-line Evangelicals, Charismatics and Fundamentalists are doing today is exactly what our Colonialist Forefathers fled from in great fear. Don't be fooled! Let freedom ring loud and clear but, beware of the false Samaritan dressed in the shepherd's clothing. A Jay Eddy ajayeddy@bc.seflin.org
