Lauderdale, FL 33302 **************************************** September 12, 1997 TO: Honorable Senator Trent Lott Honorable Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich Honorable Sen. Connie Mack Honorable Representative E. Clay Shaw RE: A One Man Televised Committee Membership Hearing on the Appointment of Governor William Weld Honorable Ladies and Gentlemen. We would like to express our extreme dissatisfaction over the above subject televised hearing conducted by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair, the Honorable Senator Jesse Helms, Republican from the fine state of North Carolina. Likewise, we find his subliminally cruel and snide references to women and non-heterosexuals as indicative of the lack of compas- sion, understanding, and tolerance one expects only from those who would revel in feudalism while ignoring the constitutional emancipation of "all" of the people of this great nation. It is ironic that the tone of this week's hearing mirrored an image of a leadership that opposes the right to be heard and the duty to serve equitably. Unfortunately, while many are captured by a consciousness in the humanitarian service and outreach reflected in the lives of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana, we, as world leaders, reflected just the opposite during those televised hearings. Regardless of the outcome, we have seen and witnessed a charade that is unacceptable to the grass roots but seemingly acceptable within the confines of Beltway protocol. It vividly demonstrates a serious divide and again highlights that there are some who have forgotten that they are leaders born to serve, not dictate and be served. We fully support the nomination and appointment of Governor William Weld whose outstanding performance, credentials, and record of service to "all" the people qualifies him as the next U.S. ambassador to our neighbor and friend Mexico.
