"Awareness Through Education-Responsibility Through Involvement" ================================================================= ANDY EDDY TO BE HONORED IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON JULY 26TH Log Cabin Republican activists from across the country will gather in Washington D.C. this month to evaluate their achievements, set their goals, and determine the future of their rapidly growing organization within the GOP. During the series of planned events South Florida's own Andy Eddy will be honored at the convention's luncheon. Proudly, the National Awards Committee of Log Cabin Republicans has selected one of Ft. Lauderdale's own to be recognized that day. Andy will receive the 1997 LCR Grass Roots Leadership Award in recognition of his coalition building and struggle against far right exclusionists. ***************************************************************** FIGHTING THE 'WRONG' IN BOTH COMMUNITIES by a.braga For years Log Cabin, along with its Republican supporters and friends, has been criticized by many in the LesBiGay community as oxymoronic "sellouts." On the opposite side of the coin, the pol- itically-active fundamentalist arm of the evangelical-hard-line religious "wrong," have demonized Log Cabin members and any support for them as unacceptable solely on the issue of sexual orientation, not their credentials. Neither of these vocal finger-pointing diversely-opposed groups accept criticism of their own skewed agenda easily. Painting Log Cabin "Progressives" as "oxymoronic sell outs" while "yella-dog LesBiGay hard-line Democrats" support candidates who are disingenuous, mirrors the more likely image of LesBiGays who place political appointments, resume and future career goals above the best interest of the community they allegedly serve. The liberal media would have you believe that both our President and the Florida Governor are wholly committed to our best interests when in fact they deceptively closed the door on both DOMA and "Gays in the Military." They call Bush "mean-spirited" yet address Clinton and Chiles as "friend." On the other side of the coin, Log Cabin faces the wrath of the politically active evangelical fundamentalist who would deny equality of access and rights to anyone not in step with their religious beliefs. Here Progressive Republicans take their stand in defense of LesBiGay inclusion. They, like Abraham Lincoln, believe that freedom shall not be denied to others because of a minority status. Across this community there are personalities such as Scotty Buchannan, Ana Carlson, Denis Delia, Karl Clark, Rusty Gordon, and Andy Eddy - to name just a few - that personally sacrifice to show us that the torch of equality burns in the hart and soul of many dedicated people. Andy's square in the middle of it all. He was in South Florida for Anita and the Briggs struggle. He stood before the Broward County Commission during the 6/13/95 Human Rights Hearings once again defending across-the-board equality. He's held so many different offices and participated in such a diverse array of organizational efforts that his credits are, at times, quite astonishing for even those who know him best. Not only has his involvement been long-term but it's been consistent. Much to his credit Log Cabin and other organizations forge on to this day. He's an honorable man who has truly fought the "wrong." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * For information on Log Cabin National Contact: E-mail: logcabin@cais.com Phone: (202) 347-5306 x 12 - Kevin Ivers ***************************************************************** -- excepts from the South Florida's LOGGER, the newsletter of the Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida ----------------------------------------------------------------- End of Message 1-C BLCC Electronic B.B. -----------------------------------------------------------------
