CHILES TO SKIP TOWN: AVOIDS ANTI-GAY LEGISLATION MAKING IT LAW WITHOUT HIS SIGNATURE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE "Awareness Through Education-Responsibility Through Involvement" May 14, 1997 GOV.CHILES MAY SKIP TOWN TO AVOID ADDRESSING ANTI-GAY LAW Florida's Democratic Governor, Lawton Chiles, is said to be head- ing Out of Town so that he can later announce to the LesBiGay community that anti-gay CBHS147 - the denial of same-sex domestic partnership benefit rights - was enacted into law because he allegedly never saw it on his desk while in Tallahassee. If that's the case and he does in fact neither sign nor veto it within a limited number of days it automatically becomes law. According to Mof Warren, President of the Log Cabn Club, "he'll just do what he does best when it comes to his nono-heterosexual supporters. He'll blame it all on 'those mean-spirited republi- cans while never once honestly targeting any of the bill's democratic supporters." Well, this time he shouldn't get away with it. He must be held accountable. Yes, indeed as personally responsible as every other democrat and republican who either signed onto this homophobic legislation and/or was absent while hiding from it when it surfaced for codification. Only a hand full of democratic legislators, mostly from South florida, united in common opposition and tried to block this anti-gay legislation from passing. According to Sen. Ron Silver, it's another Blue Law that shows "Florida is still in the Dark Ages."
