Lauderdale, FL 33302 Contact: BLCCF (954) 563-3626 April 30, 1997 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PASSAGE OF FLORIDA LEGISLATION STIRS CONTROVERSY Tallahassee, Florida. On Wednesday, April 30, 1997, the Florida State Senate, with the exception of five demonstrative egalitarians who honestly and credibly comprehended the minority protective inclusiveness of the U.S. Constitution, endorsed and passed CBHB147 which unnecessarily denies equality of access, participation and rights to all non-heterosexual Floridians. Evangelical Political Nationalist have declared that the unanimous passage of CSHB 147, which bans same-sex unions and all corresponding associated rights that opposite-sex unions pursue and enjoy, was a victory in the religious war against the forces of evil destroying this nation from its roots up. Republican State Sen. John Grant, espousing the fundamentalist position, vigorously supported and introduced 147. This style of ole-line discriminatory legislation -formerly used against people of color and Biblically justified by Southern Baptists- was defended by the politically active evangelicals because it allegedly protects the moral fiber of the family. Grant claims that his bill shields America against the "morally abhorrent gay" community. He further claims it's not homophobic and it's "not about dis- criminating against homosexuals."The socially conservative Repub- lican Senator cautiously alleges his actions are purely economic and a necessity because it prevents a group of people "from forcing the sharing of pension funds to inheritance laws" that may impact our society at the expense of the family unit. Fundamentalist and Evangelical political activists support Grant and his fellow Senators. Florida Christian Coalition Director John Dowles concludes that such legislative actions "shows that Florida is mainstream." On the other hand Sen. Ron Silver suggests to Sen. Grant, economics "is not what this bill is all about. This is no different than making people eat in dif- ferent restaurants or sit in the back of the bus. This shows that Florida is still in the Dark Ages." Progressive Republicans of the Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida likewise find this legislation unnecessary. Mof Warren, the club's president, noted "it's not quite Republican when you talk about less regulation and then implement the likes of CSHB- 147. It's like the politician saying don't do what I do but just as I say. It's so typical of the oxymoronic syndrome of 'loving the sinner but hating the sin.' " Broward Log Cabin Club believes that each and every politician who - like silent sheep - simply signed on with Grant likewise signed onto his oratorical rhetoric which demeans, insults, and misrepresents all non-heterosexuals who are loyal, hard-working, law abiding, and dedicated residents of the State of Florida and this nation. If any of our legislators claim that these allega- tions are not a direct attack and/or insult on their part, an apology is due for the implied approval by silence. The degregation and fallacious demonization of non-heterosex- uals by intolerant EPN activists who wear the mantel of "life, liberty, justice and the pursuit of happiness" for ALL without being true to the intent is demeaningly deceptive. As the father of the GOP once noted "Those Who Deny Freedom to Others Deserve it Not for Themselves." A Jay Eddy ajayeddy@bcfreenet.seflin.lib.fl.us
