Date: Fri, 19 Apr 1996 07:19:23 -0400 (EDT) From: A Jay Eddy April 18, 1996 Honorable Governor Lawton Chiles State of Florida The Capitol Tallahassee, FL. 32399-001 RE: Mean-spirited Personal Memo on Department of Transportation Letterhead Containing Governor's Name. Dear Governor Chiles: A letter was apparently written by Luanne O'Connell, Youth Traffic Safety Program Coordination for the State of Florida on the subject of the AIDS Ride in which her office publicly comments were, among other things, "As far as the gay and lesbians of this world..let them suffer their consequences!" As an alleged radical right evangelical fundamentalist, who seeming does not believe that "We are All God's Children," who has apparently side-stepped the biblical words of her Savior-not suggesting the often out-of-context misused writings of His followers- she obviously rejects the inspiring directive of "Golden Rule" and the meaningful "Beatitudes." By corresponding on State of Florida stationery, Ms. O'Connell has confused her public service to all in the state with the essence of "Freedom of Religion" and "Freedom from Religion Persecution." She has abused her duty as a servant to all citizens. Contrary to her "social-evangelical-supremacist" version of "brotherly love" there are many gay women and men who work very hard, pay taxes, own homes, are wonderful contributors to volunteer services organization, are active members of accepting religious institutions, etc. We call upon you, our elected officials and bureau chiefs across this state to evaluate this type of attitude in the work-place and encourage sensitivity training so that this "inquisition" mentality against a minority community ends. As we honor all those who have suffered inhumane abuse in the death camps of Nazi Germany and elsewhere lets follow the American dream of escape from "Religious Persecution" and hold true to "One nation under God with Liberty and Justice for All." Thank you. Sincerely, M. Warren, President Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida cc. Log Cabin Republicans Media Representatives Rainbow Democrats Rep. James Bush Sen. Connie Mack Rep.
