I have been waiting for someone else to post, but here it is: the vote was 214 in favor of expelling NAMBLA (and two other groups: Vereniging Martijn and Prject Truth/Free Will), and 30 against. The vote needed 80% of those voting to carry, so the motion WAS carried. Some arguments in favor of the motion to expel (from the minutes of the debate): this was not a new issue but has been debated since 1988, the importance of UN observer status, the impossiblity or great difficulty of being recognized by the European Community and the council of Europe if the motion did not pass, general objections to pedophilia and a refusal to establish any age of consent, objections from Japan and Africa to NAMLA's portrayal of intergenerational sex in those places, the belief that ILGA's hard won gains would be fatally compromised by its failure to expel NAMBLA. Some arguments in opposition of the motion to expel: the right wing will never be satisfied by this but will demand more compomises, ILGA should be self- defined, the lack of criteria for expulsion, NAMBLA had not contradicted the aims of ILGA.
