ILGA BULLETIN SUMMARY ILGA gets official status at the U.N.! On Monday 29 March, 1993, the ILGA obtained Roster consultative status -- the first lesbian and gay group to gain official status. The main themes of ILGA's 7th Regional Conference for Eastern and Southeastern Europe, held in Vienna from the 14th to the 18th of April, 1993, and attended by 218 community-based AIDS workers and lesbian and gay activists, were how best to prevent the spread of AIDS in Eastern Europe, and to achieve gay and lesbian emancipation. Israel Conference in Knesset - On February 2, 1993, history was made for lesbians and gay men in Israel when the Knesset hosted an official conference on homosexuality. It was hosted by MK Yael Dayan (daughter of the late General Moshe Dayan) and was attended by 100 lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. SPPR a national group with local groups through the country, said the conference increased interest in its activities, it has recently built the first lesbian and gay community center in the Middle East. In April, the ILGA and the European Human Rights Foundation jointly launched the study Homosexuality: A European Community Issue. It had been commissioned by the Foundation and the European Commission in 1991. The study concludes that discrimination against homosexuals is widespread throughout the EC. In April, 1993, Norway became the second country to adopt partnership law. After 4 years of work by Norway's lesbian and gay group, the law came into force in August. Abracao - an AIDS solidarity group in Portugal, founded in June of '92, has raised a lot of money, produced shows, ads and posters. In April, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the prohibition under Cyprus law of male homosexual conduct in private between adults constitutes a violation of the European Convention of Human Rights. Alecos Modinos, president of the Liberation Movement of Homosexuals of Cyprus, had brought this case forth in 1989. On the 98th anniversary of the arrest of Oscar Wilde, April 5th, '93, three young British gays asked the European Court of Human Rights to rule that the age limits are discriminatory. This will be a lengthy and costly procedure but British gay groups have no other practical alternative.
