Date: Fri, 28 Nov 1997 18:36:11 +0100 From: Iglyo Amsterdam Subject: General Meeting of International Lesbian and Gay Youth organisation Amsterdam, 28 November 1997 Dear Friends The Annual General Meeting of the International Lesbian and Gay Youth Organisation (IGLYO) will take place in Milton Keynes, England from January - - 1998. This meeting is held to review the work of the organisation in 1997 and identify priorities for IGLYO in 1998 and beyond. The meeting is being hosted in conjunction with our member group, Milton Keynes YouthLine. Attendance at the meeting is open to representatives of lesbian and gay youth and student organisations who are in membership or interested in becoming members. For those of you who have not heard of us before here is some short general information. Our Aims include q To bring an end to discrimination against young lesbian, gay, and bisexual and transgendered people the world over. q To support the emancipation of young lesbians, gays, and bisexual and transgendered people the world over. q To create equal opportunities for all young people. In order to fulfil these goals IGLYO has firmly committed itself to the struggle against sexism and racism. The organisation practices a policy of positive discrimination for women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and members of other traditionally under-represented groups. Our work includes the publication of Speak Out, an international magazine for lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth. Speak Out is distributed to all IGLYO member organisations, as well as other interested groups and individuals. It also serves as a bulletin concerning IGLYO's activities. The organisation's political work consists mainly of participation in youth work on an international level. IGLYO is presently involved with a number of international, national, and regional youth groups including: the, the European Youth Centre and Foundation, The European Youth Forum, UNESCO, the Commonwealth Youth Program and various United States youth groups and organisations. In addition, IGLYO considers international campaigning to be of great value. We will continue to organise and co-ordinate such activities. Lastly, the organisation provides lesbian, gay and bisexual youth with a forum in which they can exchange ideas on an international level. IGLYO sponsors activities such as the International Lesbian and Gay Youth Conference, Youth Exchanges, and the Lesbian and Gay Youth Penpal Program. Membership is available to any lesbian, gay, and/or bisexual youth or student organisation that is either fully autonomous or an integral part of another organisation. IGLYO defines youth as individuals 26 and under. Groups that are ineligible for full membership, such as adult lesbian, gay, bisexual and or transgendered organisations, political parties, or other groups can become associate members of IGLYO provided they appoint a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered youth contact. Plans already underway for 1998 include an international conference on health in Amsterdam, a seminar for those establishing youth groups in Belgium and also a seminar for young women who are active in youth or student work.
