WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittees voted to: -- CUT $13 MILLION from the Ryan White CARE Act from the current year's (1995) appropriation. The CARE Act provides funding to states and cities to care for people with AIDS. --CUT $23 MILLION from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's prevention programs. These programs have a proven track record of effectiveness in stemming the spread of the disease. --ELIMINATE the $186 MILLION Housing Opportunities for the People with AIDS. (HOPWA). HOPWA provides assistance to tens of thousands of people with AIDS who would otherwise be homeless. These cuts now move to the full House Appropriations Committee for approval. The Committee could vote on this issue as early as THIS THURSDAY (3/2/95). ACTION NEEDED: TO CONTACT MEMBERS: Call 202-225-3121 CALL the Committee Members: Remind them that if these cuts become law, more people will get sick, go without care, and become homeless. URGE them to vote no on the AIDS cuts in the rescission package. See the Appropriation List below for how the Committee members voted (not all of the members of the committee have had a chance t ovote on the cuts).
