(June 19, 1992) The Human Rights Campaign Fund, the nation's largest lesbian and gay political organization, expresses strong support for the long-awaited government report which criticizes the Pentagon's policy of excluding lesbian and gay Americans from service in the armed forces. Tim McFeeley, Executive Director of the Campaign Fund, released the following statement: "The General Accounting Office's impartial study confirms what fair-minded Americans knew all along -- the Pentagon's policy has no basis in fact. The policy is based on bigotry, pure and simple. No effort by the Pentagon to suggest that the needs of the military mission require the exclusion of competent service personnel will hold weight against the overwhelming evidence that now exists showing that lesbian and gay personnel are an important component in our nation's defense. "Competent and qualified lesbian and gay Americans should not face discrimination when they seek to serve our nation in the military. The Pentagon's own studies indicate that lesbian and gay troops perform just as competently as do non-gay troops. Now, the GAO has confirmed that there is no scientific or sociological basis to support the exclusion of gay men and lesbians from the military. "The report confirms that the current policy is a waste of tax dollars that undermines the American ideals of equal opportunity and equal responsibility. We will continue to press for an end to the ban through legislation. Americans will not tolerate this waste by the Pentagon and the White House. Our country cannot afford to discard competent soldiers and sailors and throw away millions of dollars."
