VICTORY FUND RECOMMENDED CANDIDATE PROFILE Roberta Achtenber for Mayor of San Francisco Former Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), recommended candidate Roberta Achtenberg made history as the Clinton Administration's highest ranking openly lesbian appointee, and the first openly gay appointee ever confirmed by the United States Senate. The widely televised confirmation hearings (complete with vicious attempts by Sen. Jesse Helms to block her nomination) brought Roberta to national prominence and showcased her credentials and her record as an effective leader. With your help, Roberta can make history again as the first out lesbian or gay man to win a big-city mayoral race. The latest polls show that Roberta is now just a few percentage points away from winning a spot in an anticipated run-off, and her support is growing rapidly. Roberta also comes out the winner when placed head-to-head against her likely run-off opponent, conservative Mayor Frank Jordan. Prior to her HUD appointment, Roberta was one of the first out lesbians elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where she earned a reputation as a hard-working, reform-minded legislator. She has already garnered support from the Alliance (California's largest gay PAC) and ANGLE (Access Now For Gay and Lesbian Equality), and locked up endorsements from hundreds of local and national leaders, including Congressmen Barney Frank and Gerry Studds, San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano, and activists Urvashi Vaid and David Mixner.
