VICTORY FUND RECOMMENDED CANDIDATE PROFILE Ken Yeager for California State Assembly Holder of a Ph.D. in Education from Stanford University, Dr. Ken Yeager has dedicated his life to empowering others through education and activism. A well-respected professor in the Political Science Department at San Jose State University, Ken became Santa Clara County's first openly gay elected official when he won a seat on the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Board in 1992. In December 1994, he was elected President of the Board. Ken has served on Santa Clara County's Grand Jury, the General Plan Committee, and chaired the AIDS Task Force for its first three years. Ken's political involvement spans more than 20 years, beginning with an internship at San Jose City Hall. In 1984, he co-founded the pioneering gay political organization BAYMEC the Bay Area Municipal Election Committee. He served as press secretary for Congressman Don Edwards and managed two successful campaigns against anti-gay initiatives. Ken's community service resume is a mile long and his work has earned him numerous honors, including commendations from the Santa Clara Human Relations Commission and the U.S. House of Representatives. Ken's campaign platform mirrors the priorities of his district (quality education, government reform, and sensible economic development) and he has assembled a top-notch campaign team to help get that message to the voters. In a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than two to one, Ken's chance will be increased if he wins the March 1996 Democratic primary.
