VICTORY FUND RECOMMENDED CANDIDATE PROFILE Carole Migden for California State Assembly One of the nation's most recognized and respected gay/lesbian leaders, San Francisco Supervisor Carole Migden is running for the State Assembly seat held by retiring Speaker Willie Brown. Before her election to the Board in 1990's historic "Lavender Sweep," Carole served as President of the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, as a member of the State Health Commission, and as Executive Director of Operation Concern, a mental health agency serving the needs of the lesbian and gay community. Carole has sponsored legislation to reform the budget process, restructure city departments, modernize government, and improve transit services. Among her numerous achievements, she has forged a reputation as a leading voice on gay and lesbian healthcare issues. She led the effort to strengthen San Francisco's AIDS service delivery system and to create new models for AIDS prevention. Since her re-election in 1994, Carole has worked to create nationally recognized standards for testing community water supplies for Cryptosporidium, a parasite that can be deadly to people with compromised immune systems. She has also initiated efforts to create a lesbian/gay community center, strengthen domestic partnership protections, address the issue of domestic violence in the lesbian and gay community, create innovative safe sex programs, and promote breast cancer awareness.
