The government's leading research agency on the AIDS epidemic has over 6,500 employees and contractors across the country, 80 of whom announced the formation of the Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees (GLOBE) in a general E-mail message Nov. 1. GLOBE, which was approved by CDC directors, got about 100 direct E-mail responses. But a CDC spokesman said they included several hostile messages that characterized homosexuality as perverse sexual deviancy and made crude jokes about the group. ``My house wasn't spray-painted, my car wasn't spray-painted and there was no physical attack on me,'' GLOBE president Michael Brown was quoted as saying in an article published by the Atlanta Constitution. ``But many members took it personally,'' the environmental health scientist added. Dr. David Satcher, the CDC's director, issued a memo the next day warning of possible disciplinary action, and pointing out that ``the use of E-mail to convey inappropriate comments is prohibited and will not be tolerated.'' The memo also said insulting behavior violates the standards of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to which the CDC belongs. -- TwinkCode v1.12 T8(6!)
