This article was published by GLAAD/New York in their January/Febuary bulletin. The only way to defeat honophobia is to confront it. "JFK" IS GROSSLY ANIT-GAY Oliver Stone's much ballyhooed film JFK equates gay men with moral degeneracy, while proposing that gay conspirators were behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy! Widely criticized for distortions of fact, the movie glamorizes controversial former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison, contrasting his family life to the orgiastic decadence of the film's gay villains. David Ferrie (Joe Pesci) and Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones), along with a racist male hustler (Kevin Bacon), are a cabal of gay facists who mastermind the Kennedy murder for the CIA/mafia/military- industrial complex. Stone dwells on the kinky sexual practices of Shaw and Ferrie (from gratuitous gropings to bizarre masquerades with naked, painted young men), while ignoring the sex lives of his heterosexual villains. Shaw, portrayed stereotypically in an excessively affected manner, is called "a fag" and "a cocksucking faggot." Some have charged Garrison was, in reality, an intemperate witch- hunter who ruined Shaw, in part, because he was homosexual. But even supposing these men were conspiraors, the lurid depiction of their gayness, to augment Stone's portrait of evil, is purely homophobic. Stone now says he would like to make a screen version of The Mayor of Castro Street, Randy Shilts's biography of Harvey Milk. While he may be one of the few producers in Hollywood with enough clout to get that project realized, let him know he had better come to terms with his own homophobia first. Also let Warner Brothers know that it should have challenged Stone's cinematic gay-bashing, and that the studio owes us gay characters who are not villians (or buffoons).
