The major networks and local stations all had prominent, compelling stories from Washington. But for sheer volume, no one matched C-SPAN, which had continuous live coverage of the rally from the Mall for six hours. Write to thank: Mr. Terry Murphy Vice President of Programming C-SPAN 400 North Capitol N.W. Suite 650 Washington, DC 20001 For newspaper coverage, The Washington Post deserves special praise. Its next day coverage was second to none and its Sunday issue included stories in nearly every section, including a peek at possible gay and lesbian Bible figures, an historical perspective on the gay movement, reviews of new AIDS books, and an analysis of relations between the African-American and gay and lesbian communities. Write to express your thanks to: Mr. Fred Barbash Editor of National News The Washington Post 1150 15th Street N.W. Washington, DC 20071 As for magazines, our praises go to The New Republic, a GLAAD Media Award winner last year. The May 10 special issue, "Straight America, Gay America," included six articles on lesbian and gay topics, ranging from historian John Boswell on democracy, homosexu- ality, and military service in ancient times to Urvashi Vaid on a strategy for the gay and lesbian movement. Write to thank: Mr. Andrew Sullivan Editor The New Republic 1220 19th Street N.W. Washington, DC 20036 LESBIAN CHIC IN NEW YORK MAGAZINE ================================= Lesbians have finally "arrived" according to the May 10 issue of New York Magazine. This glossy cover story details the new wave of lesbian visibility and how we've earned it. The article contains a good balance of profiles of celebrity lesbians, national lesbian leaders and lesbian locals. While a bit on the light side, this is very positive and diverse coverage from a magazine which has given our community short shrift in the past. Write to: Mr. Edward Kosner Editor and President New York Magazine 755 Second Avenue New York, NY 10017 THIS COMIC STRIP'S THE BEST =========================== One comic strip just got much better. "For Better or For Worse," distributed to over 1,400 newspapers across the country, recently had one of its longtime teen characters come out of the closet. Lawrence, strip regular Michael's best friend, realizes he's gay, tells Michael, and then his parents. For five weeks the strip deals with the folks flipping out, the kid hitting the streets, the straight best friend's ultimate support, and many other issues facing gay youth. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston received a lot of flack for the storyline, but stuck to her guns, even though 20 newspapers pulled the strip. Write to: Ms. Lynn Johnston Universal Press Syndicate 4900 Main Street Kansas City, MO 64112 If you haven't seen the strip (it runs in New York Newsday and The Daily News) you can get all five weeks worth by sending a self- addressed stamped envelope (58-cents postage) to the Editorial Dept. at the above address. GOOD HOUSEKEEPING: BAD ATTITUDE =============================== Good Housekeeping magazine has decided to sweep lesbians and gay men under the rug by excluding them from their new promotional campaign of highlighting "non-traditional" families. This national family magazine has been a household name for decades. Excluding our lesbian and gay sons and daughters, mother and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents is unacceptable. That's why GLAAD/NY has targeted Good Housekeeping with a campaign to include gay men and lesbians in their "non- traditional families" campaign. Write to: Mr. Alan Waxenberg Publisher Good Housekeeping 959 Eighth Avenue New York, NY 10019 Tell him about your family and our community. Have your parents, "in-laws," sisters and brothers write also. REDBOOK: CAMPUS CAPERS ====================== How bad is campus homophobia? How safe do those who are coming out feel? How are college communities dealing with this issue? These are questions addressed by Redbook in an informative and lengthy article entitled "Gay on Campus" by Stephanie Mansfield. This even- handed article also questions straight students' attitudes towards the new openness on campus and how it affects their lives. Ms. Mansfield shows how campuses across the country are including lesbian and gay issues in sensitivity training for incoming freshmen, adding academic courses in lesbian and gay history and literature, and founding support groups for students coming to grips with their sexuality. This highly personalized feature demonstrates that change is taking place not just in big cities but in the American heartland as well. Write to thank: Mr. Tony Hoyt Publisher Redbook Magazine 224 West 57th Street New York, NY 10019 JOHNSON WAXED ============= Two national hate groups, Donald Wildmon's American Family Association (AFA) and Christian Leaders for Responsible Television (CLeaR-TV), have launched a major assault on S.C. Johnson & Son Inc., makers of Johnson Wax. Johnson has been targeted for sponsoring television programs that contain "homosexual jokes" (Love and War) and "lesbian innuendo" (Golden Palace). So far, the company apparently has not acquiesced to these pressures. We need to counter this hate campaign! Encourage Johnson to resist the homophobes and to support quality television programs with positive lesbian, gay and bisexual content. If you use any Johnson Wax products, be sure to mention that as well. The company manufactures a wide range of personal and household products (including Agree shampoo, OFF insect repellent, Drano, Glade room deodorizer, Pledge and Windex). Write to: Samuel C. Johnson Chairman Johnson & Son Inc. 1525 Howe Street Racine, WI 53403 HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL ================== Though devoted primarily to the more than six million Jews exterminated by the Nazis, organizers of the just-opened United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in Washington DC, have also documented the 10,000 gays and lesbians who were victims. Early visitors have been impressed by the range of exhibits that touch on gay persecution. On entering, each visitor receives an identity card of a Holocaust victim; nine of the 500 possible are gay men, one is lesbian. There are even a pair of the notorious pink triangles on display. Additional archival material apparently exists. Curators may feel encouraged to put more of it on display if asked. The Memorial is powerful and an important reminder of the power of hatred. Support the Memorial by visiting (14th Street near Independence Avenue in Washington, DC) and write to: Ms. Sara Bloomfield Executive Director United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, S.W.
