KAREN WEGMANN, President Wells Fargo Foundation 420 Montgomery Street, 12th Floor San Francisco, CA 94163 Dear Ms. Wegmann, This is a letter of support for Wells Fargo's brave decision to end its support of the Boy Scouts. I have served on the charitable funds committee where I work and have blocked Boy Scouts contributions, too. It was not easy for me to stand up and make my case in front of my fellow employees at the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation. I'm sure it was no easier for a visible contributor such as Wells Fargo to experience the wrath of a well organized, very mean and loud opposition. Thank you very much for taking a simple stand for fairness where our State and Federal governments have been woefully incapable. Sincerely, Bryan J. SEYMOUR United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Seymour, Thank you for your letter of May 22, 1992 in which you assured me that you would monitor the legal cases surrounding the Department of Defense policies which prohibit admission of lesbians and gays to the Uniformed Services. I am very sorry, but I found your letter to be woefully inadequate. I am fully capable of monitoring the situation myself. I expect much more from my Senator. On March 20, 1991 and again on May 17, 1991, you wrote to me stating that you were inclined to support legislation which would make discrimination based on sexual orientation illegal. What I am asking you today, sir, is to do just that. You are my U.S. Senator, Mr. Seymour. Your job is to be my advocate in the legislative process. I respectfully request that you perform the following simple action items for me: (1) Sign on as a co-sponsor to S-Res 236 (Sense of the Senate to rescind DoD Directive 1332.14 Section H.1). (2) Sign on as a co-sponsor to S-574 (Civil Rights Amendments Act of 1991). (3) Ask President Bush to eliminate the military ban of gays and lesbians by executive order. You and I both know that the ban is a waste of government funds and human resources. As a Republican with a conservative sense of sound fiscal policy, won't you please not only do what is morally the right thing to do, but also financially the right thing to do? Please don't tease me with letters which tell me that you promise to do absolutely nothing. Please support and sponsor legislation which will bring America closer to being a fair and just home for all of its citizens. Sincerely, Bryan J. Blumberg BRYAN J. Box 931898 Los Angeles, CA 90093-1898 To the Editor, Thank you for printing the ratings from the Log Cabin Republican Club and the endorsements from the Stonewall Democratic Club. One thing, however, puzzles me: Some of the candidates which received favorable ratings answered a questionaire from the Traditional Values Coalition stating that they were opposed to our civil rights. The TVC asked State Senate and State Assembly candidates: "Would you vote to oppose giving homosexuals and bisexuals special protection as a legitimate minority based solely on their sexual preference? (AB101)." Congressional candidates were asked: "Would you vote to oppose giving homosexuals and bisexuals protected minority status under existing civil rights laws? (HR 1430)." The Log Cabin Club gave H. "Beck" McKeon, Bill Glass and Hunt Braly ratings of "good." The Stonewall Democratic Club endorsed Gary Hamud and Elliott Graham. These five candidates answered the above questions, "yes." I would like to know why they received favorable reviews from our own political clubs when they are opposed to our civil rights. Sincerely, Bryan J. Blumberg BRYAN J. I am concerned that: * Artists now feel they must self-censor in order to get grants; * The rules for obtaining grants have changed but are ambiguous; * The NEA will no longer fund gay and lesbian artists and organizations; and * Gay and lesbian artists will be sacrificed in order to "save" the NEA. Senator Jesse Helms and Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association are two of the most vocal and powerful bigots in this country. I would be very offended if they endorsed me. I am deeply concerned to have learned that they have endorsed you. Please do not buckle under political pressure. Please do what is right and fund artistic projects for all Americans. I am a Gay American and I have a right to have the NEA support lesbian and gay artists. Thank you. Sincerely, Bryan J. Blumberg BRYAN J. I urge you to rescind DoD directive 1333.14, Section H1. A 1991 poll by Penn and Schoen Associates found that 65 percent of Americans believe that Gay men and Lesbians should be allowed to serve in the Armed Forces. 81 percent believe that they should not be discharged from military service if they are performing competently. It is a terrible waste of human spirit and of tax dollars to dispose of hard working men and women who are doing admirable jobs for our country. It is hypocritical to keep gay Assistant Defense Secretary Pete Williams in the Pentagon, but to continue to discharge other hardworking people from the service. I ask you to do whatever you can to eliminate this repugnant discrimination by the largest employer in the nation. Sincerely, Bryan J. Blumberg here's the file, armspeople dat n President George H.
