The only way to defeat homophobia is to confront it. ____________________________________________________________________________ INTRANSIGENT ADVERTISERS GLAAD is calling to task two more advertisers who, despite the fact that gay people make up a huge share of their market, refuse to advertise in gay magazines or newspapers: The Gap stores and Calvin Klein. The Gap (which also owns Banana Republic stores), is a nationwide chain which cultivates a hip, contemporary image. Gays and lesbians helped make The Gap the huge success is is today, but while the chain enjoys gay dollars it treats the gay press like a pariah. Write to: Donald Fisher Chairman and CEO The Gap, Inc. P.O. Box 60 San Bruno, CA 94066 Calvin Klein has cultivated gay customers with homoerotic ads, all the time denying that his near-naked men in seductive poses are meant to attract gay men! Whether you feel that these ads are a step forward (including gay imagery in mainstream advertising) or not, Klein's on going refusal to advertise in gay publications means he exploits us for his gain while refusing to support our financially-strapped publications. Shearson Lehman Brothers ran a full page ad in the autumn/winter 1991 issue of METROSOURCE, an upscale gay guide. This marks the company's first foray into gay media, and caused enough of a stir to warrant a news item in ADVERTISING AGE! Shearson, a nationwide financial services giant, deserves a show of support and encouragement to advertise again in lesbian and gay publications.
