LAMBDA TO DEFEND EAGLE SCOUT'S VICTORY OVER ANTI-GAY POLICY: Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (LLDEF) will defend Eagle Scout James Dale's victory in a New Jersey state appellate court on Tuesday, January 5. The court ruled in March 1998 that Dale’s expulsion from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in 1990 was discriminatory, after the BSA learned that Dale was gay. The BSA is appealing the decision to the New Jersey State Supreme Court, which will hear the case at 10:00 a.m., to be followed by a press conference by Dale and LLDEF Senior Staff Attorney Evan Wolfson outside the courthouse. Wolfson, who will argue on behalf of Dale, said "James Dale exemplifies what Scouting is truly all about — honesty and respect for the rights of others. The lower court was right when it said Scouting was not about discrimination, and should not be shielded from New Jersey’s strong civil rights laws." New Jersey prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the BSA was found to be in violation of this law in the Dale case. For more information, contact Peg Byron (LLDEF Communications Director) at (212) 809-8585, or via pager at (888) 987-1984. INTERNET BANK FOCUSES ON LESBIAN, GAY CONSUMERS: A new bank aimed at lesbian and gay consumers will open its doors later this year on the Internet. G & L Bank, which can be found at http://www.g-lbank.com, is envisioned as serving customers online with traditional banking services. According to a recent Associated Press report, Chairman Steven Dunlap conceived G & L Bank after his plan for a gay and lesbian resort was refused financing. Dunlap was quoted as observing, "The Internet now allows us to deliver to this community without having bricks and mortar. It actually allows me to put a bank branch in every house where there is a computer." For more information about G & L Bank, contact Steven Dunlap (Chairman, G & L Bank) at (850) 429-7400 or via e-mail at glbank@g-lbank.com.
