The conference, with the theme "Dealing an Open Hand in the Newsroom," will be held in Las Vegas. Among those slated to participate are producers and editors from Entertainment Weekly, Soap Opera Digest, Entertainment Tonight, Frasier, Armistead Maupin's More Tales of the City and The Opposite of Sex; the senior vice president of Walt Disney Touchstone and the co-founder of Storyline Productions. Tim McVeigh will talk about how America Online helped out him to the U.S. Navy. GLAAD representatives will sit on three panels. Also scheduled are day-long trainings in the basics of the World-Wide Web, magazine and book writing, TV production and computer-assisted reporting. TRAINING LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER YOUTH TO THRIVE: The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is accepting applications for scholarships to help lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth attend its national conference, Teaching Respect for All '98. The annual gathering, to be held at the Oakland, Calif., Marriott on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, will be preceded by a special day-long Youth Organizing Intensive workshop on Friday, Oct. 30. The scholarship fund has been named the Dockers Khakis Youth United Against Bias, for the fund's primary sponsor. A FESTIVAL OF SISTAHS: African-American lesbian, bisexual and transgender women will gather in the Malibu mountains off the Pacific Coast Oct. 2-4 for the eighth annual SISTAHfest, a multi-event community celebration. Events scheduled include a talent show, pajama party, the Gal-her-ria for vendors, a 24-hour cafe called "The Comfort Zone" and a "Sacred Space" tent for meditation. The sponsoring organization, the California-based United Lesbians of African Heritage, is all volunteer-run, according to Jeannette Bronson, co-chairperson of its board of directors.
