Trevor won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. The film airs Aug. 11. Due to the sensitive matter of the main character's failed suicide attempt producers secured start-up funding from the Colin Higgins Foundation to create Helpline, the nation's first 24-hour toll-free hotline aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (lgbt) youth. In conjunction with the Helpline, producers have created a website with information on supportive lgbt organizations. That site is located at http://www.trevorproject.com . In Chicago, hundreds responded to an appeal on LesBiGay Radio by helping to pay for a July 31 full-page ad which ran in the Chicago Tribune on July 28. The response was co-sponsored by groups including Oak Park's Metropolitan Church of the Incarnation, Horizons Community Services, It's Time, Illinois! and the Illinois Federation for Human Rights. The conservative coalition's July 28 ad suggested that lesbians and gay men can 'convert' to heterosexuality. It ended with the exhortation, "If you love someone, tell them the truth." The July 31 response ad ended with, "If you really love someone, take the time to find out the truth." For more information, please contact LesBiGay Radio President Alan Amberg at (773) 973-3999. 3) "MARCH FOR TRUTH" IN SOUTH FLORIDA: Another ad run by the same coalition of religious political extremists in the July 29 Miami Herald shows a toddler blowing out birthday cake candles. The headline reads: "From Innocence to AIDS. One mother's plea to the parents of homosexuals." In response, 12 South Florida lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and progressive organizations are scheduled to hold a "March for Truth" from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. Organizations from the greater Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area will march against Coral Ridge Ministries in Ft. Lauderdale, one of the ad's 15 co-sponsors. Among the groups planning to march: Parents Friends and Families of Lesbians And Gays (PFLAG) and Gays United to Attack Repression and Discrimination (GUARD). For more information, please contact Carole Benowitz of PFLAG at (561) 272-1634. 4) GAY GAMES TO BE NETCAST: For the first time, the Gay Games, the sports and cultural festival taking place this year in Amsterdam through Aug. 8, will be broadcast in the U.S. and internationally with a combination of live and on-demand sportscasts, updates and cultural features on PlanetOut Radio, an Internet broadcasting service ( http://www.planetout.com/radio ).
