Learning from a New Hampshire Teacher's Stand Against Censorship on Sunday, May 12 at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, MA. The event begins at 5:30pm and focuses on the firing and reinstatement of New Hampshire high school teacher Penny Culliton for including books about homosexual experience in her curriculum. PHOTOS COURT CONTROVERSY: A traveling photograph-text exhibit depicting a variety of families with gay or lesbian members opens May 13 at Mark's Meadow Elementary School in Amherst, MA and will be on display through Friday, May 17. The exhibit has been endorsed by many national organizations including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Gay and Lesbian Parents Coalition International, and Parents, Friends, and Families of Lesbians and Gays; however, opponents have asked for an emergency hearing on a petition to block it. There are two versions of the exhibit, one designed for children in grades K-6 and one for older students and adults. DEFENDING MARRIAGE?: The Constitution Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee in the U.S. House of Representative is scheduled to hold hearings on the Defense of Marriage Act, H.R. 3396, on Wednesday, May 15 at 1:30 pm. AMENDMENT 2 CONTACTS: The U.S. Supreme Court could rule as early as Monday regarding the lesbian and gay civil rights case from Colorado, Amendment 2 (Evans v. Romer). The 1992 ballot initiative stripped away legal protections for lesbians and gay men in Colorado, setting off a chain of similar initiatives in other states. Activists are bracing themselves for the decision. GLAAD will help the media by arranging interviews, assisting with identification of organizational efforts and background information. RESPONDING WITH OUTRAGE: Members of the direct action group The Transexual Menace are holding a demonstration and vigil in Daley Center, Chicago, May 17 to raise concern over the brutal murder of Christian Paige, a transexual woman. A press conference is planned for 8am. Paige was beaten, strangled, and stabbed to death on March 22. Her assailant is still at large.
