The report discusses the role of the Far Right in the Republican party, who the Republican leaders on gay and lesbian concerns are, the dominant factors in determining such views, and more. MARRIAGE KIT: Nearly one dozen states are currently introducing or considering legislation that would prohibit the state from recognizing lawful marriages performed in other states. On February 7th the Freedom to Marry Coalition, comprised of more than 250 organizations from across the country, will be sending out information about same-sex marriages and the growing debate surrounding the right of gay men and lesbians to marry to encourage press coverage of this developing story. IDENTITY, SPACE, POWER: The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) is sponsoring a conference on February 8th and 9th in New York City. The conference, Identity/Space/Power: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Politics, will address issues of organization, strategy, and conceptualizing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender politics and identity. Participants include writer and activist Larry Kramer; Latina Lesbian activist Juanita Ramos-Diaz; activist and author of Virtual Equality Urvashi Vaid; and Riki Ann Wilchins of Transexual Menace. UNCLE SAM DOESN'T WANT YOU: The Aids Action Counsel, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), the Human Rights Campaign, and the National Association of People with Aids are among national organizations working to defeat a bill passed in Congress that mandates discharge of all military members who are currently HIV positive or test HIV positive in the future. President Clinton is expected to sign this bill. SLDN and the Military Law Task Force are asking servicemembers who are HIV positive to call for legal counsel. There is also the possibility of a joint lawsuit and a call for congressional testimony.
