The Vanguard Award honors a member of the entertainment or media community whose personal and professional contributions towards lesbian and gay equal rights has made a significant difference. Past recipients have included Roseanne, Aaron Spelling and Steve Tisch. GLAAD's Annual Media Awards celebrate individual achievement and outstanding portrayals of gay and lesbian images in all media throughout the year. "From his involvement with ABC's landmark telefilm 'That Certain Summer' in 1972 to his enactment of domestic partner benefits at MCA/Universal in 1992 while president, Sid Sheinberg has set the standard for the entertainment industry to follow in ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive treatment and portrayals of gay men and lesbians," said Los Angeles co-chair David Huebner. Added Huebner, "His commitment to these issues extends to his ongoing role in successfully encouraging other entertainment companies to adopt domestic partner benefits." New York co-chair Peggy Brady stated "Since Sid Sheinberg's influence has had such an impact on the entertainment industry and GLAAD's mission is to effect such change through the media, we'd like to publicly thank and honor him as a champion of humanitarian causes and as a friend of our community." In 1991 Sheinberg, along with Barry Diller, co-founded Hollywood Supports, the entertainment industry workplace project which provides workplace education about AIDS/HIV and sexual orientation, and which is responsible for persuading over 40 companies and unions to follow MCA's lead in adopting domestic partner benefits for employees' same-sex partners. Sheinberg serves on the National Board of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Pitzer College, the Board of Trustees of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and is a member of the American Jewish Committee. Additionally, Sheinberg serves as Vice Chairman of the Museum of Television & Radio, is on the Executive Task Force of the Mayor's Alliance for a Safe L.A., as well as The National Board of Human Rights Watch, and is the co-founder of the Children's Action Network.
