The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) would like to commend "E.R." and "Mad About You" for the revelation of two recurring characters' sexual orientation. In the January 4th episode of "E.R.," entitled "Dead of Winter," Raoul (Carlos Gomez), one of the paramedics that is frequently seen on the show, is revealed to be gay in a conversation amongst hospital workers. His "outing" was treated as a matter of fact and not made into an issue or a joke. The January 7th episode of "Mad About You," entitled "Our Fifteen Minutes," features the coming out of Paul Buchman's (Paul Reiser) sister, Debbie, played by Robin Bartlett. "In what has been a phenomenal season for the gay and lesbian community on television, we are now seeing established recurring characters come out and become part of the shows' fabric," said Tamra King, GLAAD's Entertainment Media Director,"GLAAD is quite pleased to see the inclusivity of gay and lesbian characters that television has come to offer." GLAAD is a national organization that promotes fair, accurate and inclusive representation of individuals and events in the media as a means of challenging discrimination based on sexual orientation.
