The director of community affairs, based in the New York office, would serve as a bridge between the mainstream media and the grassroots, empowering community groups to participate in media activism and maintain their own media relations. This position is a senior staff position and the individual will direct New York operations, including personnel supervision, fundraising, program development, implementation and evaluation. In addition, this person will work cooperatively with GLAAD's senior staff and serve as an adjunct managing director. The Accounting & Administrative Assistant/Office Manager's primary responsibilities will be general accounting duties such as: writing checks, handling deposits and credit card transactions, keeping vendor files and accounting files. Applicants should have experience on both IBM and Macintosh computers and have practical knowledge of MS Word 6.0, Filemaker Pro (and MacTrac), MS Excel, and accounting software. Successful applicants should have a B.S. in accounting, finance or a related field. The position involves general administrative duties which are: answering phones, faxing and copying for staff when necessary, handling office mail (both incoming and outgoing), preparing and mailing membership and volunteer packets. The position will also be responsible for general office management such as developing and maintaining general file systems, maintaining office equipment, schedule repairs and maintenance, maintain office space, supervise cleaning/recycling. Applicant must have a general knowledge of gay and lesbian issues and current events. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral are a must. Fluency in Spanish desired but not mandatory.
