The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor individuals and projects in news and entertainment media for their balanced and accurate representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Winners will be announced at the GLAAD Media Awards, which will take place in three ceremonies to be held in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. The Media Awards will be held on March 28, 1999 in New York City, on April 17, 1999 in Los Angeles, and on May 8, 1999 in Washington, D.C. Nominations for work originating in 1998 can be submitted in the following categories: film, television, music, theater, print comics, magazine, newspaper, advertising and interactive media. Submissions must have been published, released or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 1998. Past Media Award recipients include the films Bound, In & Out and Ma Vie En Rose; the documentaries The Celluloid Closet and It's Elementary; the television programs Friends, NYPD Blue and Spin City; newspaper columnists Frank Rich and Deb Price; the advertising campaigns of IKEA and Mistic Beverages; the publications Advertising Age, Entertainment Weekly, The Miami Herald and People Magazine; and the theater productions Rent and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde. Past special honorees include Cher, Phil Donahue, k.d.lang, Roseanne, Cristina Saralegui, Sid Sheinberg, Barbara Walters and Pedro Zamora.
