Date: Wed, 6 Aug 1997 13:35:09 -0700 From: Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Subject: GLAAD Internships Available The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) proudly announces part-time student internships for the fall and spring terms of the 1997-98 academic year in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City, MO, Atlanta and Washington DC. The GLAAD undergraduate and graduate internship program is designed to provide an educational experience as well as an opportunity for career focus in queer activism for students while supporting GLAAD's mission. Students who have participated in the past come from schools such as New York University, University of Washington, Cal State Long Beach, San Francisco Art Center, Stanford University, George Mason University and UCLA. Internships are available in all areas of GLAAD's work. Please find a comprehensive list of all internships currently available forthwith. All internships are for school credit. Stipends are available through special arrangement. The application deadline for fall is September 19, 1997 and the deadline for spring is January 16, 1998. ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA INTERN (Los Angeles) The Entertainment Media Intern is responsible for supporting the Entertainment Media Director in all aspects of his or her job of conceptualizing, implementing and evaluating the organization's role and activities within the entertainment industry. This intern will have administrative, research and planning responsibilities. GRANTS AND FOUNDATIONS INTERN (Los Angeles) The Grants and Foundations intern will assist the Associate Development Director in researching and writing grant proposals. This intern will also provide administrative support to the Associate Development Director and help build relationships with various foundations. INTERACTIVE MEDIA INTERN (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Kansas City) The Interactive Media Intern will work with the Interactive Media Director in researching trends in interactive media, examining GLAAD's own presence on the Internet as well as evaluating GLAAD's role in the interactive media industry. This intern will also provide administrative support for the Interactive Media Director, including work on GLAAD's Web page and working on GLAAD's e-mail list. This position is available in all GLAAD's office locations. COMMUNICATIONS INTERN (New York) The communications intern will work with the Communications Director and Publicity Associate on media relations, scheduling interviews with GLAAD staff and GLAAD initiatives in the press. This intern will assist researching story ideas for GLAADAlert, GLAADLines and on-line alerts as well as helping with the production of press releases. VOLUNTEER COORDINATION (New York, Los Angeles) The Volunteer Coordination intern will work on outreach to the local community in the effort to build GLAAD's volunteer database. This intern would be responsible for coordinating volunteers for special events in their local area, office support and maintaining the local volunteer database. GENERAL ADMINISTRATION (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Kansas City) The General Administrative intern will have the opportunity to work in all facets of GLAAD by providing support to various staff members on a daily basis. This position is available in all GLAAD office locations. ARCHIVAL INTERN (New York, Los Angeles) The archival intern will work in GLAAD's extensive video and clippings libraries, reviewing, sorting and cross referencing information. The work will consist of filing and database management. DEVELOPMENT INTERN (New York) The development intern will work with the Development Director on Special Events (including Media Awards), direct mail campaigns, corporate solicitation, major donor and member cultivation and recognition projects and assisting with the work of Media Resource Center development committees. Candidate should have a working knowledge of Mac word-processing systems and know how to maintain databases and do mail merges. MEDIA RESOURCE CENTER MANAGEMENT (San Francisco, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Kansas City) The Media Resource Center Management Intern will assist Media Resource Center managers with administrative duties as well as program initiatives and volunteer management. Daily duties will range from assisting with local press calls to involvement in local GLAAD events. Each Media Resource Center has a specific programmatic focus. Washington, DC Our Washington, DC office focuses on community outreach and media training in local communities. Atlanta Our Atlanta office focuses on public policy in regards to Media as well as monitors the actions of the religious right. Kansas City, MO Our Kansas City office focuses on Media Trainings for local communities, outreach to faith communities and inclusion of lesbians and gay men in educational media (Project 21). San Francisco Our San Francisco office focuses on GLAAD's publications, as well as design and production issues for most all of GLAAD's printed and on-line materials. MEDIA AWARDS INTERN (Available for spring term in Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC.) The Media Awards Intern will work with the Development Director, Associate Development Director and co-chairs of the event in their respective cities focusing on general production and volunteer coordination for this national million dollar fund-raiser. EDITORIAL INTERN (San Francisco) The Editorial Intern will assist the Publications Manager in researching and collecting factual data for stories that appear in all GLAAD publications. Writing for publications is also a possibility. This intern will also have administrative responsibilities. DESIGN INTERN (San Francisco) The Design Intern will work with the Design Associate on designing GLAAD's monthly publications and all of GLAAD's printed materials.
