From: Facessd@aol.com Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 14:05:46 -0500 Subject: South Dakota Senate Judiciary takes up HB 1143 The following is a list of South Dakota Senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee. This committee has been assigned House Bill 1143, a bill that would define marriage as for a man and a woman only. Last year, this committee tabled a bill that would have banned marriage between persons of the same sex. It is possible this committee could change its mind. In that light, we urge your letters and encouragement to these committee members to not support House Bill 1143. A time for testimony has not yet been scheduled. (Possibly, Monday, February 5th.) Committee Senators Rasmussen, Everist, Nelson and Herseth voted against the ban last year. The same is expected though not guaranteed this year. The Senate could then "smoke-out" the bill to the floor as it did last year. This is a likely scenario. Last year's bill failed on the Senate floor by one vote.
