I just wanted to put the word out to the research community that I am trying to secure research funding for a major research study of gays and lesbians. If anyone has any advice, suggestions, or comments, please send me a message at waring@scf.usc.edu. The following is an information sheet I began circulating at the NGLTF conference a few weeks ago. Please feel free to distribute this information to anyone you think might be interested. The Gay and Lesbian National Social Survey Information Sheet The Gay and Lesbian National Social Survey is a ground-breaking and vitally important nation-wide baseline study of attitudes, beliefs and opinions among gay and lesbian Americans. Timing: The study will begin fielding in January 1993, and the final report will be available in May of 1993. Deadline for participation in the GLNSS is January 10, 1993. Method: The study will use a mail-out, self-complete survey format because of the unique character of the target population. Survey sampling will follow a multi-stage snowball technique, which, based on research in social networks, will yield a sizable representative sample of the country's gay and lesbian population. Content: Survey questions will cover a very broad range of subjects relevant to the quality and condition of gay and lesbian life in the United States: Attitudes and Beliefs (toward life, society, politics, organizations, etc.), Social Life and Experience (career, discrimination, relationships, religion and spirituality), Gay/Lesbian Media and Information (sources of information, credibility), Health Issues, Arts and Leisure, and Demographics. The study will collected relevant and timely information that will be invaluable for policy decisions of organizations directly related to the gay and lesbian rights movement in the United States, as well as many other organizations concerned with and supportive of this segment of the population. Project Cost: Because the study is operated in conjunction with research conducted at the Annenberg School at USC, the total cost of the study is much less than if it were conducted by a commercial firm. The entire project cost is expected to be approximately $20,400. This cost covers postage, survey materials and printing, costs for coding, keypunching, data analysis, word and graphics processing, and report generation, as well as a research stipend for the Principal Investigator. Funding: Even though the study is conducted out of USC, the study is financially autonomous, and entirely funded through subscriptions from sponsoring organizations. Sixty percent of the project cost must be achieved in booked subscriptions by January 10, 1993, for the study to proceed. Participation: Organizations interested in this important study can participate in the study in two ways: as a Syndicated Participant or as an Omnibus Participant. The cost for each Syndicated Participant is $4,000. The Syndicated Participant will receive two copies of the final report (with executive summary, supporting report tables and graphs) and two copies of the detailed tables. The cost for each Omnibus Participant is $6,000. In addition to two copies of the report and detailed tables, the Omnibus Participant will be able to place up to three proprietary questions on the study, receive full analysis of the resulting data as exclusive chapters in their report, will receive an executive presentation of the study findings, and a computer- readable copy of the data set.
